SERIES 3: Regular Season, 2013

This incarnation synthesized some of the better parts of series 2 with some of the workaday parts of series 1. The goal was to put up one Outlet per week, drawing on our stable of writers. We shortened the pieces and tried to work out the Kinks. Did we succeed? No, Ray Davies refused to work out for us. But the series isn't too bad regardless.

  1. Flops, Loops, Wings and Falls: July 29, 2012 (Dewey x4)
    • Piece #1 in our ill-fated Olympic coverage, Dewey recaps a gargantuan number of Olympic games.
  2. Drums & Play-by-Plays: October 13, 2012 (Adam, Jacob)
    • Adam discusses the loss of a friend and the dunking Drummond -- Jacob retells the ballad of a burdened Beal.
  3. The Perkins Play and Mike Brown Minutes: November 5, 2012 (Alex, Jacob)
    • Why does Scotty Brooks play Perkins? Plus, the unbridled comedy of Mike Brown Minutes.
  4. Wade's Smoking Lung & the Defenseless Suns: January 9, 2013 (Aaron, Adam)
    • The allure of Dwyane Wade's play set to the tune of a smoker's lung, as well as the dismal Suns.
  5. Grant Hill's Tenth Centennial, Shot Clock Follies, and Dribbles: January 16, 2013 (Aaron, Alex, Adam)
    • An announcer that can't get over himself, shot clock problems, and the Suns dribble their season away.
  6. Kyrie Irving, the Demon Barber of Q Street (plus, Durant's Living Future & the 5%): January 23, 2013 (Aaron, Alex)
    • Kyrie Irving has the demeanor of a killer. Durant is the future of the NBA. The 5% are marginalized.
  7. The Battle of Bad Decisions: January 30, 2013 (Aaron)
    • What happens when two teams play a game completely devoid of fun and completely chock-full of awful decisions? This piece!
  8. Inspector Gadget's Game and Basketbality Unveiled: February 6, 2013 (Aaron, Alex)
    • An ode to Tayshaun Prince's wholly original game. Also, Alex discusses the meaning of Basketbality.
  9. Abandoning the Suns, a Collective RJ, and Redemption: February 14, 2013 (Adam, Alex, Aaron)
    • Adam Koscielak officially abandons the Suns, a team collectively decides to be Richard Jefferson, and the Spurs redeem themselves.
  10. Trade Reactions & a Crisis of Confidence: February 21, 2013 (Aaron, Jacob)
    • Aaron tries -- and fails-- to respond to every trade regardless of the trade's worth. Jacob discusses the Thunder's mental roadblock with Miami.
  11. Apple Turnovers for a Balky Spring: March 6, 2013 (Aaron)
    • The Thunder aren't losing in the first round. Why? Turnovers, dear boy -- Turnovers.
  12. Nuggets of Redemption (plus, a Tribe Called BLECH): March 20, 2013 (Aaron x2)
    • The Nuggets atone for some early season jitters, and the Clippers' bench officially has fallen into disrepair.
  13. Streakin' Ain't Easy (plus, The Return of Alex Dewey): March 22, 2013 (Aaron, Alex)
    • It's not easy to defend a long win streak. Also, it's not easy to be Alex Dewey.
  14. Exceptional Follies and Our March Madness: March 27, 2013 (Alex, Adam)
    • Sometimes, Alex Dewey is exceptionally confusing. Also: the NBA's March Madness.
  15. The NBA's Bizarre Gems and Selective Empathy for Mr. Rose: April 10, 2013 (Aaron, Adam)
    • The NBA has some weird games. One of them happened on the 9th. Also, are we REALLY empathetic for Derrick Rose?
  16. Forgettable Jazz (plus, The Worst Outlet Ever Written): April 11, 2013 (Jacob, Alex)
    • Jacob Harmon can't remember who the Jazz are, much to Thelonious Monk's dismay. Plus: Alex Dewey talks turkey.

SERIES 2: Playoffs, 2012
This incarnation had significantly more success than the first, partly because we went completely weird with it. We had half to quarter length pieces, but tried to approach them in a more abstract and fulfilling way than the old Outlet. The blend stuck, and most people appreciated the series in its second form.

  1. “Easter passed, though.”: April 30, 2012
    • Includes ruminations on the Clipper comeback vs. Memphis & Durant's legacy-building.
  2. From Miami, with Punch-Drunk Love: May 1, 2012
    • Includes Aaron's tale about the time he punched a cactus and a piece about how all is right with the world.
  3. As the Clock Tolls, it Tolls for McGee: May 5, 2012
    • Includes a dirge for the fallen Mavericks, and an appreciation of JaVale McGee's imagination.
  4. Dewey Defeats Miami: May 7, 2012
    • Includes a piece noting the connections between the 2012 Knicks and 1948 New York Governor Thomas Dewey.
  5. Why Can't Everyone Be Like the Spurs?: May 10, 2012
    • Includes a piece wondering why other teams can't do what the Spurs do, and a JaVale JaVignette.
  6. Making Free Throws, and the Project Playoffs: May 12, 2012
    • Includes sympathy for those who miss their free throws, and an ode to the "Project Big"
  7. Brothers in Arms: May 13, 2012
    • Includes a dirge for the fallen Nuggets, set to "Two Cathedrals"
  8. It's Not Over Til It's Over: May 22, 2012
    • A retrospectively hilarious piece where Aaron states that he doesn't think the Indiana Pacers are done.

SERIES 1: Early Regular Season, 2011-2012
In this incarnation, the Outlet began as something of a "recap, review, observe" type series where Aaron and Alex recapped the games as they tried to watch every game of the season. The piece was a traffic killer, though, so we decided to abandon them in favor of better-named pieces after a few weeks into the season. Some good things there, but alas.

  1. Ham Down, Man Down: December 25, 2011
  2. The King is Dead, Long Live the Kings: December 27, 2011
  3. Tuesdays with Norris: December 28, 2011
  4. Lob City Is Blue: December 29, 2011
  5. The Ballad of Ricky Rubio: December 31, 2011
  6. The Days of Auld Lang Syne: January 1, 2012
  7. The Show Must Go On: January 5, 2012
  8. One More Red Jefferson: January 10, 2012
  9. Aesthetics, Free Throws, and Slogging it Out: January 12, 2012
